How Night Vision works
How does Night Vision work
Night vision technology allows us to see in near-total darkness by amplifying the faintest traces of available light. Whether it’s starlight, moonlight or other residual light night vision devices (NVDs) transform invisible details into a clear, usable image.
Image Intensifier Tubes (IITs)
At the heart of most night vision devices is an image intensifier tube. Here’s how it works:
1. Light collection – The front lens gathers ambient light, including some infrared, and focuses it onto a photocathode.
2. Photon-to-electron conversion – The photocathode converts incoming light into electrons.
3. Amplification – These electrons are accelerated and multiplied through a microchannel plate (MCP), generating thousands of electrons from just one photon.
4. Phosphor screen – The amplified electrons strike a phosphor screen, producing the glowing green or white image we associate with night vision.
Types of Night Vision
• Green phosphor (traditional) – Produces the familiar green glow, easier on the eyes during long use.
• White phosphor (modern) – Renders images in shades of black and white for higher contrast and improved detail recognition.
